Tummy Tuck Risks and Complications

Many people want to get rid of the excess skin and flab that are frequently a consequence of pregnancy, weight loss, gravity, or aging.  If you find yourself in this situation and long for an abdomen that’s more tight and flat than loose and flabby, you may choose to have a tummy tuck. Risks and complications are obviously things you might be concerned about as a prospective patient, but it’s important to know that they are a part of any surgical procedure, including a tummy tuck. Scars are also to be expected, but the techniques surgeons use today can minimize the size of the scars and make them much less noticeable.

Dr. Stoker is happy to meet with you personally to discuss all aspects involved in a tummy tuck – risks and complications, scars, recovery time, or anything else. Request a consultation with Dr. Stoker online or call his office at (310) 300-1779.

Tummy Tuck Risks and Complications
All surgery carries with it certain risks and complications; tummy tuck surgery is no exception.  Here is a partial list:

  • Infection
  •  “Dog Ears”
    • Sometimes “bunched-up” skin and fat may occur at the ends of your incision (creating a “dog-eared” appearance); dog ears can easily be removed post-operatively under local anesthesia.
  • Loss of sensitivity (usually temporary)
  • Excessive Scarring
  • Necrosis (death of skin or fat)
    • Extremely uncommon
    • Having poor circulation or smoking increases this risk
    • Revision surgery may be required for optimal results
  • Dissatisfaction with abdominoplasty results
    • Any patient may be dissatisfied with the results of any cosmetic procedure. Therefore, it is critical that you discuss your expectations with Dr. Stoker prior to having a tummy tuck. This way, you are likely to be satisfied with the cosmetic outcome of the procedure.

Incision Size:
Dr. Stoker uses the smallest possible incision size necessary to accomplish the desired cosmetic results. However, it is not always possible for Dr. Stoker to determine the exact size of the incision until he is actually performing surgery.  If a surgeon promises you a very small incision in an effort to reduce the size of tummy tuck scars, remember that sometimes this small scar comes at the expense of “dog ears” (see above) or a smaller overall improvement. In other words, if the incision had been appropriately larger, this complication would not have occurred. Dr. Stoker will carefully evaluate your unique case in determining proper incision size.

Incision Placement:
Another way to minimize the appearance of tummy tuck scars is judicious incision placement. To that end, Dr. Stoker will place the incision for the tummy tuck at low location on the abdomen. This approach results in tummy tuck scars that will not show even in a bikini or other revealing clothing. He will discuss the placement of your incision to customize the results based on your desires and expectations.
