Tummy Tuck Alternatives for Overweight People in Los Angeles

People who have lost a significant amount of weight —whether through diet, exercise, or bariatric surgery—often have stubborn areas of fat and overhanging skin that simply will not go away.  For the majority of patients, the biggest problem area is the abdomen.

Patients who have lost significant weight are sometimes impeded from further weight loss by the loose skin on their lower abdomen.  These patients may not yet be ideal candidates for a full tummy tuck, but may still benefit from the removal of lower abdominal skin.  This tummy tuck alternative for overweight people is called a panniculectomy.  It focuses on removing the most severely excessive skin on the lower abdomen rather than working on the entire abdomen.

Dr. Stoker is happy to meet with you personally to discuss his tummy tuck alternative for overweight people. Call him at (310) 300-1779 or set up a consultation online.

What is meant by a tummy tuck alternative?
A panniculectomy is a limited type of abdominoplasty designed to remove large quantities of skin and fat hanging from the lower abdomen. The medical term for this overhanging skin is panniculus (it is also known as a pannus).  This is an option for some patients who have not yet lost enough weight to qualify for a full tummy tuck. The goal is to remove enough skin to permit the patient to have further success in losing weight.

How does panniculectomy differ from a tummy tuck?
Panniculectomy has several important features that set it apart from a classic abdominoplasty (tummy tuck). Here are some of these key differences:

  • A tummy tuck tightens the abdominal muscles; panniculectomy does not.
  • Panniculectomy primarily removes excess skin in the lower abdomen (below the belly button), whereas a tummy tuck can remove skin in the central and upper abdomen as well.
  • A tummy tuck involves surgically undermining the remaining skin (separating it from subcutaneous fat and muscle layers); panniculectomy does not require such undermining.

Which patients can benefit most from panniculectomy?
Panniculectomy is a good tummy tuck alternative for overweight people, especially those who have:

  • Loose abdominal skin confined primarily to the lower abdomen
  • More weight to lose, but find the panniculus (excess skin and fat) so debilitating that it makes losing the weight very difficult
  • Significant need to remove the panniculus, but who are older or have other medical problems that  make this smaller procedure a better alternative
