Tummy Tuck of Hispanic

As a result of life events like pregnancy, rapid weight loss, and natural aging, your abdominal skin may have lost elasticity and begun to sag. To transform your stomach from flabby to flat, you might be considering a tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty.  Every surgery carries side effects and possible risks. However, a tummy tuck of Hispanic patients may involve slight differences as compared to a tummy tuck performed on patients of other ethnicities. Dr. David Stoker and his staff will be able to fully educate you about the procedure as well as possible side effects.

Dr. Stoker is more than happy to meet with you about having a tummy tuck or any other procedure. You can set up your consultation online or give Dr. Stoker’s office a call at (310) 300-1779.

Tummy Tuck of Hispanic Patients – Possible Differences Post-Procedure
In performing a tummy tuck of Hispanic patients, there may be certain differences postoperatively in this particular patient population. These may include:

  • Excessive Scarring (Keloids)

Dr. Stoker has extensive experience working with Hispanic patients to optimize their healing and scars. Although they seldom occur, keloids may form at the incision site.  Keloids are a dense overgrowth of scar tissue that more commonly forms in patients with darker pigmented skin, making them a potential complicating factor for some after a tummy tuck of Hispanic individuals. If keloid formation happens, it can be successfully treated using a variety of approaches by Dr. Stoker.

  • Skin Discoloration of Incision site.

Discoloration of the skin surrounding your incision site may occur during and after the healing process. For darker-skinned Hispanic patients, the skin may become lighter; conversely for lighter-skinned patients, darkening may occur. This discoloration generally disappears within the months following your surgery, but can potentially take up to a year or longer to return to normal. There are topical creams – usually containing hydroquinone-- that may speed up this process.

  • Prolonged Recovery Time

A tummy tuck for Hispanic patients will tend to have a similar recovery time to those of other races and ethnicities.  Typically it requires at least one week before returning to work and one month before returning to exercise.
