Pregnancy after Tummy Tuck

Is pregnancy after tummy tuck possible? Yes, it is possible to become pregnant after you have had the procedure, although it is recommended that you wait to have the surgery until after you are done having children. However, if you have plans set to have children after a tummy tuck, it is best to let Dr. Stoker know so that he may design the procedure to fit your specific needs.

Dr. David Stoker is a skilled tummy tuck surgeon and an authority on many facets of abdominoplasty.  He remarks, “The usual sequence of events is to have a tummy tuck after pregnancy, not the other way around, but I am familiar with a number of cases where a woman-- who is typically in her 20s or 30s—just happens to test positive for pregnancy after tummy tuck surgery.”  Some women change their minds and decide they want another baby even after having a tummy tuck or “Mommy Makeover” surgery.  The tummy tuck should not interfere with future surgeries in these cases.

Dr. Stoker would be more than happy to go over more information about pregnancy after tummy tuck with you in person and review your options. Request an in-office consultation online or call Dr. Stoker at (310) 300-1779.

Pregnancy after Tummy TuckWhat Could Happen?
During pregnancy, your abdomen stretches to accommodate the growing fetus. As the fetus grows, the muscles that the tummy tuck tightened may stretch and even tear or separate. The skin overlying these muscles is also stretched as your baby develops. Since this skin was tightened as part of your previous abdominoplasty, pregnancy after tummy tuck surgery can stretch both skin and muscle to such an extent that they may not be able to return to the taut appearance they had after your tummy tuck.

Even though having a tummy tuck is not recommended if you are planning on having more children, many women do go on to have children after the procedure.  In such women, moderate to severe soreness of the abdominal muscle is a moderately common occurrence. With today’s advanced medical and surgical techniques, permanent damage after pregnancy is extremely rare.

Women who choose to wait until after childbirth to have a tummy tuck are often interested in the “Mommy Makeover.” This combination operation includes a tummy tuck alongside other procedures, such as liposuction and breast lift and/or augmentation, and is designed to help you recapture your youthful, pre-pregnancy figure.
