Abdominoplasty in Los Angeles

Diet and exercise sometimes aren't enough to give you the body you'd like to have. No matter how many sit ups you do, miles you run, or calories you count, stubborn pockets of abdominal fat and loose excess skin often persist – even after significant weight loss. Once-taut abdominal muscles may lose their tone, contributing to a prominent tummy bulge. You are not alone; many patients who come to Dr. David Stoker, a well-known tummy tuck surgeon in Los Angeles, have gone through similar feelings of frustration. Fortunately, the tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, provides an excellent opportunity to recapture that lithe, youthful figure or physique.

Dr. Stoker is happy to discuss whether tummy tuck surgery could be right for you. Call his office at

What is a tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is a cosmetic surgery procedure that is highly effective for correcting the following:

  • Loose, sagging skin on the lower abdomen
  • Excess lower abdominal fat
  • Stretch marks on the lower abdomen
  • Loose/weakened abdominal muscles (abdominal muscle laxity)
  • Pubic laxity

Who is a good candidate for tummy tuck surgery?
An ideal candidate for a tummy tuck procedure is:

  • Healthy (no significant medical conditions)
  • A non-smoker (smoking increases surgical risk and inhibits normal healing)
  • Not morbidly obese (many people who are overweight - but not obese – are still good candidates)

Tummy Tuck - The Procedure
After administering general anesthesia, Dr. Stoker will perform the following steps during your tummy tuck surgery:

  • Remove a large amount of lower abdominal skin – along with most stretch marks
  • Remove the lower abdominal fat attached to the skin
  • Tighten the abdominal muscles (known as the rectus abdominis or six-pack muscles)
  • Redistribute the upper abdominal skin across the entire abdomen
  • Create a new belly button  inside the freshly-tightened abdominal skin
  • Tighten and lift the pubic area

A typical tummy tuck takes approximately two hours.  Depending on the size and complexity, more time may be required. A mini tummy tuck (see below) takes only about one hour.

Recovery after Tummy Tuck
Recovery times vary, but most tummy tuck patients can return to work in about a week.  However, you should limit your physical activity for about six weeks, because early exercise may impede the healing process.

Make sure you have someone who can be by your side to assist you during your first few days of recovery from your tummy tuck. You will also have several post-operative appointments with Dr. Stoker in order to remove sutures and assess your recovery progress.

The Dr. Stoker Difference
Experience
Experience is everything when it comes to choosing a tummy tuck surgeon. Dr. Stoker has had rigorous training from the finest academic institutions. He has honed and refined his surgical techniques through years of practical experience, performing thousands of tummy tuck procedures. The skill of your surgeon is the most important factor in determining a successful outcome. Not every surgeon is good at cosmetic surgery. It requires a synthesis of art and science – of technical prowess and artistic flair – to give tummy tuck patients the beautiful results that Dr. Stoker is known for.

Stoker’s Special Tummy Tuck Techniques
An important part of the Dr. Stoker Difference is that Dr. Stoker uses the most advanced, innovative techniques available when performing abdominoplasty. At every stage of the procedure, he pays close attention to details that will make the difference in achieving a beautiful result.  Here are some of the many important differences that make Dr. Stoker’s approach unique and better than the traditional techniques.

Smaller/Less Noticeable Scars
Dr. Stoker will always use the smallest incision possible to accomplish the desired cosmetic result. Because longer incisions enable him to surgically remove more excess fat and skin and create a tighter appearance, Dr. Stoker’s strategy is often to place the scar as low as possible so it is less noticeable, even when wearing low-cut bathing suits or undergarments.

Better Belly Buttons
Dr. Stoker uses his own special technique to create a better-looking belly button.  Key points of this technique include:

  • Using a crescent-shaped skin excision to create a natural-looking upper fold of skin
  • Removing fat surrounding the umbilicus (belly button) to give you more youthful contours
  • Deepening the base of the umbilicus to form an “innie” belly button (unless you request an “outie”)
  • Hiding the scar by placing it slightly on the inside edge
  • Making stitch marks invisible on the tension-free closure by burying external sutures

Pubic Lift
Rejuvenating the pubic area (mons pubis) by lifting and tightening it is an integral part of a Dr. Stoker tummy tuck. The traditional procedure overlooks what is an excellent opportunity to restore the pubic area to a more youthful appearance.

Types of Abdominoplasty
There are two main types of abdominoplasty performed by Dr. Stoker.
Complete abdominoplasty, the most thorough of the procedures, covers the entire abdomen, and restructures muscle as necessary, and relocates the belly button in order to take full advantage of your improved physique.  If you plan on having children or losing further weight, you should probably postpone having a tummy tuck until after these goals are accomplished. Abdominoplasty is a procedure that is most effective when you have reached – or are close to reaching – your ideal weight.
The mini tummy tuck, also called partial abdominoplasty, is a more limited procedure best suited to patients who have a small amount of excess skin in the lower-middle abdomen below the navel. It does not correct upper abdominal skin or lax abdominal muscles, and does not typically involve moving the belly button. For many women who are relatively lean but have an extra bit of skin in the lower-middle abdominal region  (such as the area above a Caesarian section scar), a mini tummy tuck may be both appropriate and effective.
